Country in which you worked as a Language Assistant : France (Lyon)
How did the program helped your language development?
I studied French in high school and university but I had always yearned for the opportunity to live and work in France. The Language Assistant Program afforded me that opportunity and I would simply describe it as life changing. I was able to improve my command of the French language through daily interaction with natives. Furthermore, I learnt different lingoes and other nuances of the language that one does not learn in a classroom setting. I will admit, I was a little intimidated by interacting with the natives at first but overtime with practice I gained more confidence.
Interestingly, my participation in the Program helped to strengthen my command of my own native language, English. I had to pay keener attention to my pronunciation, enunciation and overall use of language. This was to ensure my students heard the authentic sound of a native English speaker and they understood when I spoke in class. In preparing and delivering the lessons, I also become more mindful of certain technicalities such as phonetics and syntax. Additionally, I was able to learn a little Spanish based on my interaction with other Language Assistants from Spanish speaking countries.
Any other comments?
Even though I lived and worked in France, I was able to visit other European countries such as Spain, Italy and Switzerland. This broadened my appreciation for various cultures and made the experience more enriching.I forged life long friendships and I met some amazing persons. I am grateful to have participated in the Program as it prepared me for my current job as a Foreign Service Officer. I wish to encourage anyone who is considering to participate in a Language Assistant Program to go for it! It will change your life .
